Chronicles of the Five Kingdoms
The Beggar's Guild
Resting inside Kingsbridge is a ghetto called the Gallowdowns (aka The Gallows). Gallowdowns is a low spot in the city, and regularly floods when the rains come. That means that all of the human waste and general filth flows down into the area creating a regular muck of mud, animal blood from Butcher’s Hill, and shit. At the center of Gallowdowns is Justice Square, known as Hangman’s Hollow by the locals. This is where murderers, thieves, and other criminals are regularly hanged.
With criminal gangs controlling much of the area, the neighborhood is incredibly dangerous for those who don’t know the proper etiquette. It is important to join or pay tribute to the Gallows’ gangs. The most powerful gang in the region is the Guild of Beggars. The brutal and unforgiving Beggar King controls this criminal organization. The Beggars Guild also has power outside of the Gallows. Their agents are spread around Kingsbridge running everything from protection rackets to extortion rings, taking cuts of almost every business venture in the city.
His Beggars are a mix of things. The children in the organization wander the streets of Kingsbridge panhandling for the guild, and must give most of their meager earnings as tribute to the Beggar King. If a child is not providing enough tribute, they will mutilate the child in hopes of increasing the handouts they receive. Those that survive to adulthood are then moved into more nefarious activities ranging from drug smuggling to prostitution to murder. The Guild of Beggars is a brutal organization that responds to any threats with violence, and crossing the Guild is considered a death sentence. Some nobles have tried to use the Guild for various schemes, only to have it turn ugly when they underestimate the will of the organization.
